Adrian Tse (b. 1989) works with the automaticities that condition mass consciousness, which underpins our crisis of disconnection from ourselves, our roots and our planet. He engages these structures as foundations, honing in on stagnant energy to transform blockages in the subject matter he’s exploring.
His approach involves ethnographic research, archival data, and factual inquiry, while using myth-making and wisdom-making to unveil potentialities — those seen, unseen, or yet to be realised. His work encompasses moving image, sound, print and immersive experiences to navigate the complex interplay between individual and collective realities.
Drawing from his multiracial roots, lifelong migrations and early encounters with death, he has cultivated a deep empathy for what he terms the ‘subtle realms’ or the gaps located in identities or seemingly solid realities. This sensitivity informs his collaborations with cross-cultural communities, places, and histories, as he seeks the eternal within the transitory and the multi-dimensional within the specific.
Looking ahead, he is drawn to explore the disappearing, overlooked or hidden cultures of the Asia-Pacific and Europe, tracing their roots and interconnectedness through ecology, spirituality, and the transpersonal. His vision is to co-create a new framework of wisdom that is globally threaded and unifying. Working with collaborators, Tse is currently refining these processes through research and experimentation in the field.
